Diagramming the archive

Anderson, Robert (2016) Diagramming the archive. [Show/Exhibition]

The output is a creative project, a collection of artworks in response to two sets of archival documents and reconstructed acts that inscribe the subject’s relation to the state: the signing of the Covenant and Declaration documents at Belfast City Hall in 1912 and the reading of the Proclamation document at Dublin General Post Office in 1916. Research process: A series of drawings manifest as fictional book plates. The research approach was through the translation of the acts of inscription, in relation to ornamental building features and symbolic objects surrounding Covenant and Declaration documents. Research insights: The project reconsiders the documents’ production through mechanical printing processes and hand drawing. Through the conceptual framing of observation, the documents are transformed into artefacts. The project considers the ‘writing subject’ and their position in relation to the power of the state. Dissemination: The research was disseminated via exhibition at The Irish Architectural Archive, Dublin, 1 June - 30 June 2016 and The Linen Hall Library, Belfast 5th – 30th September 2016.
