Playing by eye

Wheeldon, Matthew, Hardaker, Emma, Rae, Bobbi and Broadhead, Samantha (2018) Playing by eye. [Show/Exhibition]

The output is an exhibition of design duo Modes of Expression; Emma Hardaker and Bobbi Rae. Based in Leeds, a city historically known for its rich ceramics and textile culture, Modes of Expression are renowned for their vibrant murals found across West Yorkshire. The kindred duo takes research-led practice on a journey of mixed-media experimentation in order to produce culturally-coded, visually harmonic artwork, which is meaningful to the site in which it is created. Offering a discerning eye for tasty colour palettes and a daring sense of scale, Modes strive to make contemporary, artistic contributions to the city in which they live. Drawing inspiration from specific locations, its people and its history, Modes take a hands-on, playful approach to liberating unique perspectives through their large scale, hand-painted artworks. As curator, Matthew Wheeldon investigates the interactivity of design-led exhibitions, with an accompanying review written by Dr Samantha Broadhead that discusses the exhibitions underlying essence of the Bauhaus.
