Abstract

This article, published in Turps Banana, Issue 21, examines the white paintings of Maurice Utrillo; paintings made in Paris between c. 1909 and 1914. Here, I consider the formal, material and iconographic elements of Utrillo’s works, and offer commentary on, among other things: handling, materiality, the particularities of urban landscape painting and place, reproduction, and the significance of windows. Of importance, also, is the sense of what it means to behold a work from this period in Utrillo’s life, and, as such, the subject of spectatorship becomes central to the exposition too.
