Tom Palin

Palin, Tom (2010) Tom Palin. [Show/Exhibition]

Abstract

This exhibition was curated by Terry Jones. It was the first exhibition in which I attempted, in a more systematic manner, to explore the notion of painting as a painted object. I utilised the museum case with spotlights in order to foreground both the separateness of the objects as they existed in the space and also their relic-like properties, which included edges and thickness. These aspects would become increasingly important to me in my next body of paintings, and I sought to further consider various possibilities in several future exhibitions, culminating in my PhD show at the RCA in 2018, where playfulness in hanging and unusual configurations featured prominently in the display. With regard to the exhibited works: the six paintings in the plinth cases were painted in 2007 on recycled oak (the first series of works I painted on hardwood), from what had once been my studio table. In addition, I exhibited a series of slightly larger framed works on board. These were painted between 1996 and 2002. I was assisted in this project by Joe Mulhall and Freya Kruczenyk.
