Royal Academy summer exhibition 2016

Palin, Tom (2016) Royal Academy summer exhibition 2016. [Show/Exhibition]

Abstract

Richard Wilson co-ordinated this year’s exhibition, which included works by the duos Jake and Dinos Chapman, Jane and Louise Wilson and Heather and Ivan Morison. The Summer Exhibition is the world’s oldest open-submission exhibition, and its earliest exhibitors included Joshua Reynolds, John Constable and Joseph Mallord William Turner. It is held annually at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London. Works include paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, installations, photographs, videos and films. Sales from the show support the Royal Academy Schools; to continue the free tuition that has been offered for nearly 250 years. I exhibited two paintings, in Gallery I, both oil on oak. They were, It Came From Outer Space and The Thing From Another World (reproduced here in that order). These were two somewhat larger panels from an extended body of works on wood that I began in 2010 and had not completed by the time of this exhibition. Both were painted in a studio I occupied at Barkston House (East Street Arts), Leeds. They were from a smaller series of four, which included The Tent and The Hill, which were exhibited here in 2015.
