Small world

Palin, Tom (2017) Small world. [Show/Exhibition]

Abstract

Small World is an exhibition of 2D and 3D art objects with a maximum dimension of 20 cm in any direction. The selection panel consisted of Zoe Watson, Ray Martin and Robert Miller. The exhibition took place at PS Mirabel in Manchester, and I exhibited The Train, oil on poplar. This work was part of an ongoing series of works on wood that began in 2010, working across two studio spaces; one in Leeds and the other in Birkenhead. This exhibition offered me an opportunity to test a single small work in a rather distinct environment of similarly small works. I hoped here to consider how it is that painted objects of approximately this scale – disparate in respect of style, intention and method of making – might interact in a group situation, and one very likely to employ a salon-style hang.
